The Artist
From early childhood Hoa seemed destined to be an artist. He became one of the first artists of the post Doi Moi era to pull away from the influence of impressionism to find value in his ancestral traditions.
As Hoa said early in his career, in Uncorked Soul, Contemporary Art from Vietnam published 1991,”I want to express an intensity of feelings, so l paint not what I see but what lies beneath what I see.”
Humans and objects of traditional elements of the Vietnamese culture and fragments of everyday life have an honored place in Hoa’s compositions. Although seemingly randomly placed–at times topsy turvy, upside down or sideways–the objects fill the plane with color and a vivid urgency. This practice can be seen in a series of portraits, inspired in part by Van Gogh, that Hoa worked on for many years. The stark, dramatic, outlined silhouettes stare out from the canvas at the viewer with the intensity of an acute observer rather than the person being observed.
Despite moving away from realist imagery in his most recent works with more abstraction and line, the inspiration behind
Hoa’s work remains unchanged.
Hoa was one of the first Vietnamese artists to be invited for a residency in the USA by the Asian Arts Council and the Indochina Arts Partnership in 1994 and is currently one of the most active of the Gang of Five, exhibiting locally and internationally. His works are in the collections of The Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Hanoi, Vietnam, the Singapore Art Museum, the National Museum of Malaysia and in private collections worldwide.
