Mai Anh Dũng

The Artist

1967 Bien Hoa Town, Dong Nai Province Vietnam

Dung’s work is inspired by the Cham culture, its sculptures, bas-reliefs and religious writings which lend the works a mystical and yet traditional dimension.
Dung spent 4 years, 1983–1987 to graduate from the Decorative Art School in Bien Hoa and then went on to spend another 5 years, 1987–1992 to graduate from the Fine Arts University of Ho Chi Minh City. The artist started exhibiting immediately upon graduation in 1993 and has exhibited widely at galleries and national exhibitions within Vietnam, and in 1996 he was selected to participate in the 2nd Asia Pacific Triennial Exhibition in Brisbane, Australia, one of the premier exhibitions in the region. The artist went on to exhibit in France and Belgium and is still exhibiting and working today.

Year of the Goat 1992

A work of gouache on paper, has the whimsical and mysterious quality typical of Dung’s works, traditional and yet modern with its angular planes and kinetic energy.
