Lê Quảng Hà
The Artist
1963 Hanoi Vietnam
Le Quang Ha startled the art world in Hanoi in 1995 with his stark and rather harsh depictions of modern day life. Casting aside romantic illusions Ha utilizes a highly stylized graphic rendering of life. Employing satire and surrealism, Ha’s practice questions the status quo and attempts to create a discourse on the tensions between tradition and modern values in contemporary Vietnam.
He continues to develop his practice in many different mediums, oil, lacquer, sculpture and is now considered one of the most well-known artists from Hanoi in the international art world. Ha is known for provocative work that questions the relationships between power and control, leadership and authority. His work, The Gilded Age, a mixed-media installation named after the satirical 1873 novel by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner depicting this struggle was exhibited in the 6th Singapore Biennale 2019.
Men and Women in Love 1995, The Love Market 1995 and Returning Home 1995 were all shown in the first exhibition Suzanne Lecht mounted in Hong Kong in 1997, The Changing Face of Hanoi, in collaboration with Hongkong Land in Exchange Square, Hong Kong.
The Bad Man, 2007, is indicative of his current style. In 2019 Ha was profiled in the Singapore Biennale at the National Gallery in Singapore who have his works in their museum collection.
Ha’s works are also in the collection of the Museum for Lacquer Art, Muenster, Germany.
