Lê Quốc Việt
The Artist
1972 Thanh Hoa Vietnam
Viet spent his formative years from 7 to 17 yrs in a pagoda in Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam. While at the pagoda, Viet studied traditional calligraphy alongside Buddhism and taught himself Han Chinese and Sanskrit from the ancient Buddhist texts.
Today Viet is one of the few people that can read and write Nom, the traditional Vietnamese script. Viet was the founder of Zenei, The Gang of Five calligraphers, five young artists/scholars who are proficient in Han Chinese and also Nom, the original script of Vietnam.
Le Quoc Viet is an acclaimed intellectual artist who works with all manner of contemporary mediums; painting, installation, performance, in addition to working with woodcuts, Chinese ink, handmade Do paper, and other traditional Vietnamese art forms. In recent years Viet has been actively involved in his calligraphic work at several pagodas in Vietnam while he continues his art practice along with his research of calligraphy and Buddhism. Viet has exhibited abroad since 1999 and continues to exhibit locally and internationally.
The British Museum in London, The American Museum of Natural History in New York City, The Singapore Art Museum, the Asian Civilization Museum of Singapore and the Heide Museum in Melbourne, Australia, have Viet’s works as part of their permanent collections.
