Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng
The Artist
1976 Hanoi Vietnam
When Nguyen Manh Hung’s career began many considered him to be the Edward Hopper of Vietnam. Today he has truly evolved into his own unique artistic style which evokes Hopper’s realistic recapitulations of machinery but introduces a profound sense of playfulness, humor, and Vietnamese absurdity. His recent work reflects the contradictions and ambiguities that are so tangible in the rapid development of his home country.
As a multi-disciplinary artist, Hung is equally at ease painting as he is creating large-scale installations or exploring performance art. His particular realist style encompasses a distinctive sense of playfulness and humor that sets him apart from previous generations of artists. As the son of a jet fighter pilot, he draws on the personal in his paintings of aircraft. Depicting military planes laden with oversized grocery items, or else soaring across the sky with bushels from the rice harvest, Hung’s surreal scenes humorously morph a symbol of destruction with conduits of hope, benevolence and joy.
As one of Vietnam’s most recognized emerging artists, Nguyen Manh Hung continues to gain international attention. His work was featured in the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art 2012 at the QAG/GoMA in Australia. Over the years, Hung’s work has showed at ifa Galleries Berlin and Stuttgart, Germany; ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany; Bildmuseet, Umea, Sweden; Stenersen Museet Oslo, Norway; Yerba Buena Center, San Francisco; Jeonbuk Museum of Art, South Korea. Hung has participated in several residency programs at Art OMI NY in USA, Asian Cultural Council NYC in USA, Musee D’Art Contemporain Du Val-de-Marne (MACVAL) in France, and the Cleveland Foundation, Ohio, USA.
Hung is also known as former art director of Nha San Studio (from 2008 to 2011), known now as Nha San Collective, the first nonprofit artist led art space for contemporary art in Hanoi since 1998. He supports young artists as a mentor and to realize their work at Nha San.
