Vũ Thăng

The Artist

1970 Haiphong Vietnam

An early influence on Thang was the profound beauty he found in the Chinese and Oriental ancient arts he reproduced to make a living when he was young. Graduating from the Vietnam Fine Arts University in Hanoi in 1992, he traveled in the Central Highlands. He was attracted by the primitive and instinctive emotions expressed in the structure of their funereal houses and statuary and developed his own unique style of using these primitive elements mixed with Cubic art to create a fusion of past and present, primitive and modern. Utilizing new ways of working with lacquer Thang presented his work in Vietnam and abroad and has now retreated to the northern highlands to live a simple life in nature.
