Phạm Luận

The Artist

1954 Hanoi Vietnam

Pham Luan, a self-taught artist who has dedicated his life to painting his beloved Hanoi, is an artist who entered the art world just as Vietnam was opening up to the outside world in 1994. A careful observer of the life and landscapes surrounding him, Luan’s work quickly caught the attention of diplomats and Asian art dealers and he had his first solo exhibition abroad at the Galerie La Vong in Hong Kong in 1997.

Serious and meticulous in execution, in his works of the ordinary street scenes, beloved by fellow artist Bui Xuan Phai, Luan creates his own unique style of abstracting some of the elements and adding a naïve, honest quality to his personages in the scene.

Works in gouache on paper, oil on canvas resonate with the spirit of the artist, a man with reverence for the life that surrounds him.
