Toan spent many early years in the countryside living with the ethnic minorities during the war which developed his love of nature and its simplicity of form and color from which he draws inspiration for his creations of the magic found in nature. He is a highly accomplished ceramic artist recognized locally and abroad.
Toan graduated from the Vietnam Industrial Fine Arts University in the ceramic department and has worked at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi as a specialist in the repair and restoration of works from the 14–17th C.
In 2003 Art Vietnam Gallery and Toan were invited to exhibit his ceramics and silk paintings of the zodiac at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco. The artist continues to exhibit his ceramics, paintings and installation work often combined with original folk art inspired performance.
Toan’s works are in the collection of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Hanoi, Vietnam, The Museum of Craft and Folk Art, San Francisco, Ca., USA and numerous private collections.
