Lê Hồng Thái

The Artist

1966 Haiphong Vietnam

Le Hong Thai graduated from the Vietnam Fine Arts University in 1997, immediately establishing himself as an avant-garde voice, albeit a quiet, solitary one. Content to stand on the outside, quietly seeking his expression of self. Reclusive in nature, this man of few words seeks solitude and his works reflect his aloofness. Working a broad range of mediums, lacquer, oil on canvas, lacquer on canvas, silk, Thai is not hesitant to strike a chord of discontent or apprehension. Imbued with sentiment hidden in the image, Thai is more a loner than malcontent. Constantly seeking change, this artist is experimenting with all kinds of materials as he examines the world in which he lives. Not confined by convention Thai’s visual references are oblique metaphors, open to interpretation, becoming whatever the viewer may ascertain for themselves.

This early work from 1997, gouache on paper, utilizes oblique references to African primitive sculpture in free form flowing semi abstract strokes.

Thai has exhibited widely locally and internationally, and is in the collections of the Singapore Art Museum, the Museum for Lacquer Art in Muenster, Germany and others.
