Đỗ Minh Tâm
The Artist
1963 Hanoi Vietnam
Do Minh Tam is on the faculty of the Vietnam Fine Arts University and is one of the first artists and teachers to move from a figurative to eventually more abstract style of painting.
Tam has exhibited in Vietnam and internationally, his most recent exhibition was in 2020. The esteemed art critic Nguyen Quan notes: “‘The Children Song’ presented more than 50 paintings created by artist Do Minh Tam in recent years – who is considered as one of the most outstanding Abstract painters in Vietnam. The show also will be launch the first new book of Do Minh Tam covering his artistic practice of over 4 decades.
According to art critic Nguyen Quan: “Different from most of the rushing, dramatic abstract expressionism, the glamorous symbolism or the ‘supreme intellectual’ minimalism, Do Minh Tam’s abstract paintings are moderate and balanced. A rich palette often employs soft colors of orange-green, purple-brown, blue-pink etc., the diagonal shifts always regain balance thanks to the horizontal and vertical strokes, spatial depth comes out as the focus from the shading at mid frame. His aesthetic of humanity is kind and gentle. Perhaps he has naturally followed the principles of the master Wassily Kandinsky of abstractionism: Art is to help subtilize our soul, not to invent any form of expression”.
