The Artist
1948–2002 Hue Vietnam
Buu Chi was born into a privileged educated family in Hue but chose the life of hardship as an artist dedicated to peace and humanity. Imprisoned for his beliefs the artist had a difficult life and suffered for his ideals. His early pen-and-ink drawings and sketches on the anti-war theme were quickly recognized as a powerful art weapon in the movement of struggling for the nation’s peace.
Suspended in Time 1995
This was one of my first acquisitions of Buu Chi on a trip to Hue in early ’95.
At that time he was primarily painting oil on paper in his classic style of European inspired surrealism in an Asian world. The tension and starkness, questioning existence and its meaning, lend a dramatic depth of emotion to the work, a profound expression of the human condition in the world.
