Đinh Quân
The Artist
1964 Haiphong Vietnam
In 1990 Dinh Quan graduated from the Vietnam Fine Arts University, Hanoi where he studied lacquer painting and today is recognized as one of Vietnam’s most important lacquer artists. The earlier focus of his lacquer paintings has been the female form, which he often depicts in a refined, surrealist style. His ghostlike women sometimes seem sensual or deconstructed at times.
Dinh Quan has experimented with innovative approaches to the traditional art of lacquer painting and invented a unique and dynamic style variation to the traditional technique. Through his development of the art form he has adapted the medium to include alternative techniques and other disciplines such as sculpture. In his recent works questions of subjects and viewpoints undergo subtle inflections toward their material, spatial and historical dimensions.
Dinh Quan has exhibited extensively locally and internationally in China, Japan, France, Singapore, Norway, Philippines, Hong Kong, USA, UK, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Luxembourg, Belgium, Italy, and Korea. His works are in the museum collections of the Singapore Art Museum, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Hanoi, Vietnam and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia.
