Lê Ngọc Thanh
The Artist
1975 Quang Binh Vietnam
Thanh is the other half of the duo (twins) now internationally known as the Le Brothers.
After studying art in Hue mainly just as a way of making a living by making portraits and what they called tourist art, in 2008 the artists decided to get serious and to concern themselves with issues they felt were important to express and investigate.
Ever cognizant of political issues they produced a series of lacquer portraits of Ho Chi Minh and other prominent communist leaders; military uniforms and Mao suits flamboyantly embellished with embroidered motifs; and portraits of people who lived in what was then North or South Vietnam. Bold and assertive, they are not afraid to confront the status quo, but they are clever enough to know how to work within the system.
Their collective work has been exhibited frequently in Vietnam as well as abroad. Their art practices take diverse form of painting, installation, performance art, film and video. They have performed and exhibited their work locally and internationally including Singapore Biennale 2013 and most recently “Secret Archipelago” – Singapour En France Le Festival at Palais de Tokyo, Paris.
Today they are some of the most active and well known international artists working in Vietnam. Their wide exposure in addition to their New Space Art Foundation’s exhibition and residency center has made a wonderful contribution to the recognition of the Vietnam contemporary art scene.
