NguyÊn Cầm
The Artist
1944 Haiphong Vietnam
Cam’s early life was defined by exile and exodus. He was born and raised in Viet Nam during the first Indochina War. After a bomb destroyed his family home, Cam journeyed north for 5 years with his family through small villages and bush. Eventually his entire family immigrated to the quieter land of Laos. His father’s death in 1961 left Cam, the oldest male, to care for his 5 younger siblings. In 1969 Cam left Laos alone in order to embark on “a more personal process,” a journey that was fueled by his intellectual and creative curiosity which brought him to France to study at the l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Over the years France became Cam’s home, writing into his eastern sensibilities variations in the theme of western rationality.
In 1994 the Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts Association invited Cam to come back to Vietnam to exhibit and teach at the fine arts university. After an absence of 40 years, Cam began the reconciliation of a man with his heart and with his country. His works portray the journey of a man reuniting with his soul and country by producing works with fragments of earth, rice sacks, Do paper, paper votive offerings and used tarpaulins as he weaves the fractures of his life into a complete whole and reconciles with his past.
Art Vietnam has been working with Cam since that epic return to his homeland and regularly exhibits Cam in Vietnam and internationally. In 1998 Art Vietnam presented a solo exhibition of Cam’s works in Arts of Pacific Asia NYC, NY, USA in 2003 his exhibition Spirit Harvest at the Robert Mondavi winery, St. Helena, California, USA to honor Robert Mondavi’s birthday, and also to open the Fielding Lecht Gallery in Austin, Texas, USA. Most recently in 2020 Cam presented his work Blue Night, Red Earth: The Work of Nguyen Cam in the prestigious Rosenberg & Co. gallery in NYC, NY, USA.
Today Cam is one of Viet Nam’s most well-known and respected artists. His work has been shown in Spain, Brussels, the United States, France, Belgium, Hong Kong, Japan, and Germany and is part of many private and public collections.
