Phạm Minh Tuấn
The Artist
1961 Hanoi Vietnam
As a young innovative artist using lacquer in new inventive ways as well as his styling in other mediums, Tuan’s works were selected by Suzanne for her first exhibition, “The Changing Face of Hanoi” in Hong Kong in 1997.
Pham Minh Tuan graduated with distinction from the Vietnam Industrial Fine Arts University in Hanoi in 1984 for his creative and well executed lacquer works, the medium in which he excelled in art school. The artist exhibits locally, most recently in Hanoi in his solo exhibition In-Out Seeking at the Vietnam Fine Art Museum in Hanoi in 2014.
Works of oil on canvas, structural compositions of conceptual art, contemporary lacquer with very unusual modeling and composition were all exhibited portraying the wide range and talent of the artist.
Tuan continues to exhibit in Vietnam and has also exhibited internationally in Denmark, Hong Kong, New York, Singapore, Switzerland and elsewhere. The artist maintains an active practice of pushing the boundaries of expression to this day.
Faces, 1997
A structural totem pole of lacquer faces, was a highly unusual use of the lacquer medium at that time. This work was chosen for the exhibition to illustrate the versatility of the medium and also the innovative composition. Confident to portray lacquer in a unorthodox manner has become the hallmark of this gifted artist.
