Phan Cẩm Thượng
The Artist
1957 Hanoi
Born into a scholarly family, his father was the owner of a famous publication on Chinese traditional painting. As a child Thuong studied calligraphy, a skill which predominately appears in his current work. References to ancient Buddhist texts and temple inscriptions are visible in his art as he portrays the traditional rituals of the temples, religious stories and festivals of village life.
Thuong chooses simple and natural mediums, Chinese ink, natural pigments, handmade paper, and more recently the traditional silk, as their very nature accentuates the essence of his inspiration. His subjects consist of the world around him. Steeped in the Vietnamese culture ranging from a solitary monk in deep contemplation to a feverish masked dance festival, the totality of his work exudes a sense of the mundane merging with the divine.
Thuong’s works seem to urge one to ponder on the sublime, to allow oneself to go that one step beyond, to seek the mystery and wonder of life from the world that surrounds us. This serves to emphasize his role as an educator, as he gives his audience a historical, political and religious context through his paintings, for only then can one understand the true nature of Vietnamese art.
For many years as a teacher at the Vietnam Fine Arts University, Hanoi, and a highly respected art critic, Buddhist scholar and author of several publications on Vietnamese traditions and cultural life, he is revered for his talent and intellect. His works are in the public collections of the American Museum of Natural History, NYC, USA and also the National Gallery Singapore, and the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Hanoi, Vietnam.
