Thành Chương
The Artist
1949 Bac Ninh Vietnam
Thanh Chuong is one of Vietnam’s most well-known artists. He was born in Bac Ninh which is considered the seat of folk culture in the North and the home of Quan Ho folk singing. Coming from an intellectual, artistic family, his father was the well-known writer Kim Lan who was passionate about Vietnamese folk heritage, customs, traditions, festivals and other cultural activities which became a big influence and source of inspiration for the development of Chuong’s artistic life.
In his early childhood at the age of 7, Chuong was already creating art and attended a school for gifted students, receiving recognition for his works locally and abroad.
After a long stint in the army from 1967–1975 Chuong returned to Hanoi to pursue his art, the passion of his life. Exhibiting his works in Hanoi in 1994, he was quickly recognized locally and internationally for his works in many mediums especially lacquer works which depicted his devotion to Vietnamese folklore and countryside life.
In current times he is not only recognized as one of Vietnam’s top artists, but he has also created Viet Phu Thanh Chuong, or Thanh Chuong Viet Palace, a monument to nature and the Vietnamese culture comprised of several ancient wooden houses, ceramics, art, a water puppet theatre and all manner of historical artifacts, nestled in the hills of Soc Son north of Hanoi.
1960: Studied at Hanoi College of Fine Arts
1966: Joined the army and military engineering. Participated in combat in Central Vietnam, Laos, and the Central Highlands.
1974: Worked as an artist for Thong Nhat magazine.
1975 – Present: Served as the chief artist for Van Nghe Hang Tuan (Weekly Arts & Literature Newspaper)
