Trịnh Ngọc Lâm

The Artist

1938 Hanoi Vietnam

Trinh Ngoc Lam studied at the College of Art and Craft in Hanoi from 1957–1959 and then continued his studies at the Industrial Fine Art College in Moscow from 1960–1966.
When he returned to Hanoi he became a highly respected teacher at the Vietnam Industrial Fine Arts University in Hanoi and taught there until his retirement. Lam has many works of applied art such as the glass windows at the Children’s Palace in Hanoi where many of Vietnams finest artist have studied as young children.
Lam has works in the permanent collection of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi especially on themes of history and the life of the soldiers during the war time.

Mai Chau 1995 and Mother bringing baby home 1995 are two beautiful works on silk that Lam painted when he visited Mai Chau, a White Thai ethnic minority village near Hoa Binh, 140 kilometers southwest of Hanoi.
Both of these works are very meaningful to Suzanne because in 1994 she visited Mai Chau along with the artist Pham Quang Vinh and friends.

This White Thai house that all the artists stayed in belonged to a friend of Pham Quang Vinh in Mai Chau and it was later transported to Hanoi and rebuilt as the first home and gallery of Suzanne Lecht, called the Tree of Life. Today in 2021 this is the permanent home and salon gallery for Art Vietnam.
